As opposed to traditional dentistry, the sphere of cosmetic dentistry extends beyond the scope of maintenance of oral hygiene. Cosmetic surgery adopts different surgical procedures to cure diverse dental ailments, the most common among them being dental fillings. Gold in combination with platinum and other metals are used for this purpose. Off late, ceramic fillings have gained popularity as it blends well with the tooth colour and projects a natural look to your smile.

Another common treatment that falls under the purview of cosmetic dentistry is application of porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are thin eggshell pieces of porcelain applied on teeth directly to enhance its appearance.

Bleaching has also gained popularity over recent years. Bleaching works on improving the colour of teeth and projects a refined appearance. Bleaching procedures are mainly of two types viz. home bleaching and office bleaching.
In the former case the patient has to wear a bleaching cap which functions directly on teeth and gradually brings a white appearance. The change in colour becomes noticeable over a span of 4 to 5 weeks. On the other hand, office bleach technique uses concentrated bleaching materials and it starts showing results within a week or two.

Application of porcelain crowns is another great treatment within the scope of cosmetic dentistry. Sometimes when it become necessary to replace a decaying tooth, the concerned tooth is cut and reduced in size with the help of a high speed cutting instruments. The procedure takes about 25 minutes. The artificial tooth is then adjusted like a socket over the original one. Crowns are a very conducive method to overcome dental ailment. However this process may give rise to dental woes if the cap if not fitted properly.

Implant happens to be a further development over the process of crowning. This process is resorted to when a missing tooth has to be covered. The treatment is done under local anaesthesia. In this case the gum is cut and exposed. A titanium screw is drilled and the gums are stitched. Over the next few hours, a bone deposit is formed over the titanium screw. The gum is cut again and this time a new metal structure is screwed. Now a cap is cemented so as to project a set of natural teeth structure. Precautions are taken so that the artificial tooth does not come in direct contact with the gums. One of the main drawbacks of implant is that this surgery results in bone loss and is strictly prohibited for diabetic patients.
